Major U.S. airlines have started buying supersonic passenger planes one after another.
American Airlines announced on the 16th that it had agreed to purchase 20 units of the supersonic aircraft ‘Overture’ under development by US aviation startup ‘Boom Supersonic’.
In addition, American Airlines has secured the option to purchase an additional 40 Overture aircraft, CNBC and others reported.
Although the specific amount conditions were not disclosed, American Airlines paid a partial deposit to Boom Supersonic on a non-refundable condition.
American Airlines is the second major US airline to pre-purchase an Overture supersonic aircraft after United Airlines in June last year. At the time, United Airlines ordered 15 Overtures.
The Overture, capable of speeding up to Mach 1.7, can fly from New York, USA to London, UK in 3 and a half hours, and from Seattle, USA to Tokyo, Japan in 6 hours, the company explained.
“Passengers want a faster and more convenient flight,” Blake Scholl, CEO of Boom Supersonic, told CNBC.
After the development of Overture is completed and put into actual passenger routes, supersonic air travel is expected to resume for the first time in 20 years since the Concorde, which ended its operation in October 2003.
CEO Scholl said that the aircraft could be put into service by 2029. Unlike Concord, which ended at a high price in the past, the price of the Overture flight from New York to London is expected to be around $4,000 to $5,000 (about 5.25 million to 6.57 million won). expected
However, some are showing the view that Boom Supersonic’s ‘schedule’ is overly optimistic, considering the time it takes for existing aircraft manufacturers to get approval from the government and put them into operation.
