Costco is one of thousands of companies suing the U.S. federal government, demanding the return of tariffs collected by the government after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected tariffs in February of this year. In addition, Costco is currently facing a class-action lawsuit in the United States that claims any tariff refunds received by the company should be returned to its members. Can members receive cash?
However, Costco has not yet made a commitment regarding the question that consumers are most concerned about: “whether they can receive a refund directly.” Costco CEO Ron Vachris said on Thursday, “Our plan is to return some of the tariffs that we pass on to our members in some form.” Vachris said this during the earnings call on Thursday. Vachris explained that the company has begun submitting customs duty refund applications and expects to receive refunds in installments over the next few months. He added, “The amount and timing of our refunds depend on a variety of factors, including the actual amount of the refund received and when it arrives, as well as the progress of any litigation concerning the company’s refund process.” Overall, in the three months ending May 10, Costco achieved net sales of $69.15 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of over 11%. The company’s gas station business performed particularly well. Vachris stated, “We believe this will further enhance the loyalty of these members, as members who refuel at our gas stations typically spend more at the retail outlets.” The popularity of weight loss drugs such as Ozempic has also boosted Costco’s pharmacy business, where members can often get discounts on expensive medications.
Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said, “The value our pharmacies offer really helps members access these medications in a very affordable way.” These medications have also driven a trend towards high-protein diets, a change that Costco has also noticed. Millerchip said, “Currently, all protein-related products are selling very well, such as protein bars, protein snacks, and beef jerky.
This is an example of our proactive approach to these product areas, as we see a great demand from our members for these high-quality, cost-effective products.” Costco’s statements are currently mainly aimed at the US market, and it is not yet clear whether Canadian Costco members will be able to directly benefit. For Canadian consumers who frequently shop at Costco, the possibility of future price reductions on some items if Costco ultimately receives a large refund is worth noting, although no specific timetable or implementation method has been announced yet.
